Trophy-winning RHS wrestlers all returning next year

Feb 29, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton High School was paced by a talented junior class this year to make the Wolverines contenders in the Class 4-A wrestling ranks.

RHS had four Class 4-A West regional title winners, three second-place finishes at the state wrestling tournament, several other point scorers at state, and a fifth-place showing in the team standings in Casper.

And all the Riverton scorers from state are coming back next season.

"We have a super class coming back," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "I challenged them on Monday in a meeting to make next year the best year in school history."

Galey was assisted this year by Kaleb Howard, Nick Wilson, Ben Morgan and Matt Coughanour.

All four of Galey's coaches wrestled at RHS.

"They all get a long great with the kids," Galey said. "They put in a lot of time for the wrestlers, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make the wrestlers better."

Top weight class

Riverton's Rudy Batista and Trevor Allen

made the 152-pound weight class the strongest one for the Wolverines.

In the early rounds at the state tournament. Batista pinned Aaron Parker (Casper Natrona) and Josh Guillory (Cheyenne) to clinch a spot in the semifinals.

Allen kept on a collision course for a showdown vs. Batista, beating Jerimaih Bershinksy (Laramie) in a pin at the 3:01 mark and moving past Nathan Johnston (Laramie) 7-4 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Batista managed a 5-2 victory vs. Allen to secure a spot in the title match.

"That was a typical practice room match," said Galey about watching Allen and Batista go head-to-head for a spot in the championship match.

In the title match, Evanston's Brayton Sanders won a 5-2 decision over Batista.

In the consolation bracket, Allen pinned Sheridan's Alex Smiley in a time of 2:09. Allen lost to Jordan Fischer (Gillette) 6-1 for third.

Talented underclassmen

RHS juniors Ahren Wempen (126 pounds), Rudy Batista (152 pounds), TJ Galey (171 pounds) and sophomore Gavin Wilson (113 pounds) all entered the state tournament with No. 1 seeds after winning regional titles.

Wempen, Batista and Galey finished second at state, while Wilson came up fifth in his weight bracket.

Wilson lost to Sheridan's Jackson Hanify 8-6 in overtime in the quarterfinals.

Wilson bounced back to beat Mikes Nelson (Cheyenne Central), and Quinton Rhoades (Casper Natrona) in the consolation bracket.

Gillette's Evan Smith pinned Wilson, but the RHS sophomore ended the tournament 9-7 beating Kale Eslick (Green River) in overtime.

Wilson beat Smith in the 113-pound weight class title match at the Ron Thon Memorial tournament at Wolverine Gym.

State seniors

Allen, Drew Leach and Jasper Gurr were the only seniors for RHS to take part at the state tournament.

At 160 pounds, Leach went 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament.

Gurr posted a 2-2 record in the 182-pound weight class.
