Fast and furious.

That describes the action planned for Saturday and Sunday at the Wyoming State Chariot Race Championships on the Paradise Valley race track north of Riverton.

Racing starts at noon both days. Ticket prices are $4 for adults, and children 12 and younger are free.

In a chariot race, the driver sits behind two horses and races down a 440-yard track against another team.

"It's just a rush of the race and the challenge of the horses," owner and driver John Williams of Dubois said. "When you enjoy horses, it's great fun." This is the first time in five years Riverton has hosted the final Wyoming race of the season. "The horses enjoy the challenge going against each other," Williams said. "The rush of going down the track like that is a kick." Riverton usually has at least one chariot race per season, but this year coordinator Brigitte Kuegeler put in for the state race.

"You have to have a love for horse racing," Kuegeler said. "It's also neat because you get to have the Calcutta, where you get to bet on your favorite team."

The first day has 10 races on the program. On day two the teams will be matched based on how they did the first day.

"Most of the teams are running from 22 to 24 seconds," Williams said. This season the racers have been to Gillette, Glendo, Torrington, Rock Springs, Dubois (twice) and Saratoga.

"It's very competitive," Williams said. "All of us are running real close together this year. There will be good races."

Williams said the race in Riverton is one of the best ones of the season.

"I think that it's the best place to have it," Williams said. "We have the best community support. Brigitte does a great job of getting everything together. That is usually where we get the best crowds.

There will be a food available. Kuegeler stressed the event is a good place to bring a family.
