Wolverines pound Warriors 76-31 at homeNov 30, 2012 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
The Riverton Wolverines, strong from the beginning, outscored the Worland Warriors 34-11 in the first half and cruised to a 76-31 season-opening win Thursday night in Wolverine Gym.
Despite playing just over half the game, seniors Xavier Webb and Kade Salisbury led the Wolverines in scoring 17 and 12 points, respectively, and 11 RHS players scored during the game.
"We got to play a lot of kids. We have four games in three days, and we are not even close to being in basketball condition, but it was nice to get all the kids in. I thought everybody did a good job," RHS head coach Dick Quayle said.
Up next for Riverton is a Friday night cross-county battle against the Lander Tigers, also in Wolverine Gym. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and there is a $3 admission charge because the game is part of a pre-season tournament.
Saturday, the Wolverines will battle Lyman at 10:30 a.m. and then play Douglas at 4:30 p.m.
Also participating in the mini-tournament are Lovell and Worland. Riverton's varsity games are all in Wolverine Gym.
"We had a lot of size and experience on Worland, and I thought we shot the ball very well. The game went pretty much like I thought it would go," Quayle said.
Quayle said his team must work to get the ball inside more and that his big kids "have to work harder to get the ball inside. The nice thing is this year is that we can play inside or out."
Seniors Seth Quayle and Coley Nicholls each added nine points for the Wolverines, and Eion Meyers and Michael Johnston both came off the bench and contributed eight. Johnston's second half dunk put an explanation point on the game, with the outcome never in doubt.
