Riverton 4-0 after beating Lander, two others

The Riverton Wolverines boys basketball team continued its pre-conference demolition of Class 3-A opponents with wins over Lander, Lyman and Douglas in a preseason tournament Friday and Saturday in Wolverine Gym.

The wins pushed Riverton's record to a perfect 4-0. The Wolverines have yet to trail in any of their games this season.

The first four games this year all have been at home, but Riverton will now be on the road until Jan. 26 with upcoming games in Buffalo and Sheridan next Friday and Saturday, the annual Flaming Gorge Tournament in Green River the following week, and then games at Lander, Powell, Rock Springs and Casper (against Casper Natrona) after the holiday break.

It's a brutal schedule for Riverton.

Against the Tigers, who were playing their first game of the season Friday, Riverton's Xavier Webb drilled 12 of his team's first 19 points as the Wolverines jumped out to an early 19-5 lead and never looked back on their way to a 69-44 route of their cross-county rivals.

Webb led all scorers against Lander with 26 and got solid support from Seth Quayle and Jordan Belville, who both dropped in 16.

Lucas Watkins was Lander's leading scorer with 17, and Casey Winger added 16.

Cold shooting hurt Lander. The Tigers were 0-7 from 3-point land and shot just 38 percent from inside the arc.

By contrast, Riverton drilled 9 of 17 3-pointers.

"I was happy overall. We saw a lot of different styles of basketball, and I was happy with that," Riverton head coach Dick Quayle said.

Saturday, playing games three and four in a three-day span (Riverton topped Worland 76-31 Thursday), RHS dumped Lyman 75-41 in the morning and finished the mini-tournament by beating a stubborn Douglas Bearcats team 65-51.

Against Lyman, Webb again led all scorers with 24, and Quayle added 17. Belville again hit double figures with 10.

Saturday afternoon against Douglas, Kade Salisbury and Webb each netted 23, and Coley Nicholls added 11 to pace the Wolverines.

Salisbury, Riverton's strong and effective point guard, led Riverton in assists all weekend with 23 assists in the three tournament games.

"Kade is a special kind of player because he can control a game and not even score points. There are not a lot of guys that have done that. If he wants to score, it makes it doubly tough," Quayle said.

Seth Quayle played solid defense and blocked 15 shots during the three games in Wolverine Gym.

"I thought our kids played pretty good defense until the last game, when our defense was not that solid. We did finish well, though. It's hard to play when you are tired, but we have to be mentally tough to play the way we need to play defensively," Quayle said.
