After downing Lander, Riverton girls lose next two on weekend

Fresh off a season-opening 55-41 win over Worland on Thursday night, the Riverton Lady Wolverines gained their second win of the early season with a 50-42 come-from-behind-victory over their cross-county rivals, the Lander Lady Tigers, in front of a supportive home crowd Friday night in Wolverine Gym.

Although Lander's Shanda Post tossed in 20 points, and Keesh Rowan added 10, the Lady Tigers could not stop Riverton's Kiley Ridgway, who dominated the post with a career-high 27 points and 16 rebounds.

It was Lander's first game of the season.

"We shot terrible," Lander head coach Spike Robinson said.

Indeed. The Lady Tigers hit just three of 21 3-point shots.

The win came at a cost for Riverton, however, when senior Amy Woodward, the Lady Wolverines' athletic floor leader, left the game in the early minutes after injuring her knee under Riverton's basket. Although Woodward came back to the bench to support her team, her status is uncertain for the rest of the season. Her injury will be re-evaluated on Monday.

The teams were tied 22-22 at halftime, but the Lady Wolverines outscored a seemingly tired Lander team 15-6 in the final quarter to seal the win.

Riverton's win over Lander was the first of three games during a Friday-Saturday mini-tournament.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolverines fell to Lyman 45-31 and Douglas 54-19 to even their pre-conference record at 2-2.

Senior Bree Olson led Riverton in scoring against Lyman with 11, and Ridgway added six against a very solid Class 3-A Douglas team.

Douglas was led by senior Kassidy Scott, who led all scorers with 19.

"She is as physical as we will see. She can play with anybody," RHS head coach Ron Porter said.

And the Douglas Lady Bearcats have high hopes for this season.

"This is the best shot we've had in the six years since I've been here. We just have to keep at it," Douglas head coach Jaci Heny said, adding that she believes Star Valley will be here team's toughest Class 3-A challenge.

"Douglas is a very experienced team, and we're a very inexperienced team. I couldn't have been happier to play two teams like today. It will prepare us for our conference," Porter said.

Porter said that he was pleased with the play of Annie Phister and Olson on Saturday.

"We've got to make some adjustment offensively. We have to be a little more assertive," Porter said.

Riverton travels to Buffalo and Sheridan this Friday and Saturday as they continue non-conference play.
