Solid beginning for SHS girls with 2-1 showing

Dec 2, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

Opening weekend with a new coach and a new offense can be tough, but the Shoshoni girls didn't show many symptoms of that as they rolled to a 2-1 finish in their first appearance in the Big Horn Basin Tournament.

The Lady Wranglers topped Riverside 56-32 to open the tournament, then showed signs of fatigue in a very ugly 32-29 loss at Greybull in the Friday late game.

Shoshoni took care of host Burlington 39-28 Saturday morning.

"It was a great weekend for our kids. There was a lot of learning going on. They were figuring out to take care of each other," Wrangler head coach Max Mills said.

Against Riverside Shoshoni's defense was all over the host Rebels, blowing them out early with a 26-4 opening period. Most of Shoshoni's baskets came in transition out of their half-court, trapping 1-3-1 zone.

Sophomore Olivia Thompson plays a wing in the 1-3-1 and paced the Wranglers with 17 point, most coming off steals converted into transition baskets. Thompson also had a great night on the glass, pulling down nine offensive rebounds.

Kiyana Martin added 11, with a trio of 3-pointers, and Sarah Thompson scored 10.

In the late game fatigue and confusion were obvious factors, as neither Shoshoni nor Greybull could figure out the other team's half-court defense. Shoshoni stayed with the 1-3-1, and Greybull played a trapping 1-2-2 defense, with neither team finding an effective offense against each other.

"We needed the barn to be on fire so we could call the game off," Mills joked. "We weren't prepared for their 1-2-2 trap, and they weren't prepared for our 1-3-1 it was an ugly, ugly game."

The Wranglers played consistently good defense through all four quarters Saturday and slowly pulled away from the host Huskies.

" Our zone worked pretty well against them. After a night's rest we were able to get after them defensively again," Mills said.

Olivia Thompson again paced the Wranglers with 14 points in the low-scoring affair.

Next weekend Shoshoni opens play in the Burns tournament opening with the host Broncs at noon Friday. The Wranglers also play Southeast 2-A teams Pine Bluffs and Lingle Ft. Laramie.
