Mixed performance for SHS boys in first three

Dec 2, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

The Wrangler dominated one opponent, lost a close game, and were routed in a third.

Shoshoni picked up one win but dropped two more in their first appearance in the Big Horn Basin Tournament over the weekend.

The Wranglers opened play Friday with a 52-36 win over Riverside. The late game featured a dismal 22 percent shooting performance by Shoshoni in a close 43-35 loss at Greybull. The the wheels came off offensively at Burlington in a 46-12 loss Saturday to the highly ranked 1-A Huskies.

"It s early in the year, and we're in a good place," Shoshoni head coach Dan Martin said.

Junior guard Lawry Johnson tallied 14 points against Riverside, mostly off dribble penetration, and 6-4 senior Josh Thoren scored 16 in the paint to pace the Wranglers.

On the perimeter, Mason Steffen and Brach Pingetzer combined for three 3-pointers.

In the late game the Wranglers struggled offensively from the opening tip.

"We kept shooting the ball, but it just didn't go in the hole," Martin said. "We never had to worry about effort. The kids played hard."

Greybull opened a 17-9 lead after one, but Shoshoni picked up the defensive effort and clawed to a 20-19 lead at the half.

The Wranglers held the Buffs to just two points in the second period.

"The kids adjusted to Greybull and played good defense. They rebounded well, even though Greybull is bigger than us," Martin said.

Shoshoni trailed by just one point with less than a minute remaining, but Greybull hit a couple of key shots and converted at the line to preserve the win.

Saturday, it was ugly early and stayed that way.

The Wranglers managed just a dozen points. At one point they trailed 28-3 to the talented Huskies.

Shoshoni makes the long trek to Burns next weekend to face competition from the eastern 2-A region.
