Three RHS wrestlers reach finals in Evanston

Riverton High School began its 2012-13 wrestling journey Saturday, placing fourth in the team standings at the Evanston Invitational.

The two-day tournament featured teams from Wyoming, Utah and Idaho. The tournament used a double-elimination bracket, varsity, junior varsity and freshman divisions.

In the team standings, the Wolverines scored 240 points for their finish. Cheyenne East won the team title, putting up 342 points. Bear River, Idaho, was second at 308, and Star Valley finished third with 305 points.

The weight classes this year for Wyoming wrestlers are 106 pounds, 113, 120, 126, 132 138, 145, 152 , 160, 170 , 182, 195, 220 and 285.

Riverton�s Gavin Wilson, Rudy Batista and T.J. Galey all placed second in their brackets.

Wilson, a junior, was pinned by Sheldon Davis from Spring Creek, Idaho, in a time of 3:19 in the 120-pound title match.

Batista scored a runner-up medal at 160 pounds, dropping an 8-5 decision to Bryon Sanders from Evanston in the championship match.

Galey was edged out for his title in the 170-pound weight class, losing a tight 4-3 setback to Steven Welsh from Union, Utah.

Galey and Batista are seniors for the Wolverines.

Senior Arhen Wempen placed third in the 132-pound weight class. Wempen lost in the semifinals before coming back for third.

Beau Batista added a third at 152 pounds. Batista beat Brock Teichert from Cokeville 11-4 in his final match of the tourney.

Riverton�s Casey Savage was sixth at 195 pounds. Reece Prosser (182 pounds), Riley Reichert (220 ) and Dawson Steeds (heavyweight) competed but didn�t make it into the top five.

In the junior varsity division, Riverton�s Hank Osborne had the highest finish with a third at 126 pounds. Joseph Ladd (106 pounds) and Kyle Page (182 pounds) were fifth.

In the freshman division, Oscar Marrufo placed fourth at 120 pounds.

Tigers seventh in Powell

Lander Valley High School placed six wrestlers in the varsity division Saturday at the Powell Roundtable Invitational.

Andrew Von Rein placed second at 126 pounds. Ty Alexander finished fourth in the 120-pound weight class.

Jason Hanson was fourth at 182 pounds. Jacob Miller (152 pounds) and Kegan Wells (heavyweight) were fifth.

�I was fairly pleased with the way our athletes competed this weekend,� LVHS coach Nick Fulton said. �We did not win every match by any stretch, but I thought that we battled well.�

The Tigers finished seventh in the team standings.

�I did not see any quit in our team,� Fulton said. �It�s a starting point. We need to continued to improve each week.�

Powell won the title scoring 341 points. Worland was second at 291 points and Casper Natrona finished third with 210 points.

�There were a lot of returning state medalists in most weights, making the competition pretty fierce,� Fulton said.
