Tigers loaded to make another run for 3-A swim title
Dec 5, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Lander Valley High School swim coach Bruce Gresly has put together another deep and balanced boys team for the 2012-13 season.
The Tigers won their 16th straight Class 3-A swim title last year.
LVHS started practice last week with 28 swimmers on the roster.
"There isn't any event that I won't have six or seven that will be able to do the event real strong," Gresly said. "I'm looking to qualify four swimmers in every event."
Gresly doesn't make a lot of changes at the start of the season in his lineup.
"You start with what the kids swam last year," Gresly said. "Then you move the around after awhile to see if there is anything new or try to get them qualified in almost everything."
The coach likes the numbers he has on the roster.
"This is probably one of the biggest boys teams that I will ever have," Gresly said. "We have good balance from seniors to freshmen."
LVHS is the early favorite on the Class 3-A West side. Buffalo also has an experienced team.
Buffalo and the Tigers won't see each other until the Worland Invitational set Jan. 19.
"I think that they have 12 kids out, and 10 of them are seniors," Gresly said. "Buffalo is going to be real strong."
"I'm going to try and get my seniors qualified in everything," Gresly said.
The seniors are Bobby Cercele, Ian Etter, Alex Kaiser, Dalton Koshko, Darren Pursel, Matt Robinson and Zach Tilton. Etter is the only diver in the senior group.
"The seniors give me the all-around balance," Gresly said.
The Tigers begin the season at 4 p.m. Friday, hosting Powell in a dual at the Lander City Pool.
"I think that we are just excited to have a swim meet," Gresly said. "That is where the speed is developed. They can gauge how much harder that they have to work."
The Tigers will swim against Powell, Cody and Worland at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lander.
"Some of these kids are in good shape," Gresly said. "it will be a good starting point for us."
After the first weekend, LVHS will swim against Cody and Sheridan in Cody Friday, Dec. 14. LVHS swims in Powell on Saturday, Dec. 15.
