Rams down Wind River
Dec 7, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
It was a nice home opener Thursday for the Dubois Rams and first-year head coach Aric Hanusa as the Class 1-A Rams defeated 2-A Wind River 57-54. The win is the first in a long time for Dubois over the Cougars, and it almost didn't come to pass. Wind River rallied from 12 down to tie the game late in the contest.
Dubois led by three after the first period and jumped on the Cougars in the second behind a stellar performance from Colter Leseberg. Leseberg tallied 26 total points on the game to lead all scorers.
What wasn't exactly stellar was the Dubois effort at the free-throw line. Dubois shot a paltry 5-22 from the stripe including a 3-for-13 performance in the final minutes of the game.
After an even third period the Rams led 48-36, but Wind River came alive from beyond the arc and took advantage of their three point opportunities to knot the game at 54 with two minutes left to play.
Caleb C'Bearing paced the Cougar comeback, hitting a trio of 3-pointers in the final period. As a team Wind River hit seven of eight from the line in the period as well.
Dubois regained the lead on a Leseberg drive and following layup to hold on for the three-point win.
"We were playing a 2-3 zone and didn't adjust to the 3-point shot as quick as we should have," Hanusa said.
Austin Tharp added a dozen points for the Rams and tallied an impressive eight blocked shots, while Spencer Carrico pulled won eight defensive rebounds.
Wind River was led by C'Bearing's 13 points while Brodie Miller added a dozen.
Dubois hosts Farson at home on Saturday, while Wind River entertains Rocky Mountain.
