Riverton drama takes 3 state titles; 7 named all-state

Dec 9, 2012 - Staff

Theater students from Riverton High School ranked among the best in Wyoming at the conclusion of the Wyoming State Drama Festival last weekend at Central Wyoming College.

The Wyoming High School Activities Association sanctions the festival as the state culminating event for high school drama.

Riverton won three state championships and three second-places in the Class 4-A division and ended up third as a team in the 12-team classification.

Nine Wolverine performers earned all-state honors as well, several in more than one dramatic category.

Highlighting the RHS effort was the state-champion arena theater play "Brighton Beach Memoirs," by Neil Simon, directed by RHS drama instructor Annette Thornton. Cast members Asia Carr, Shannon Linch and Drew Thornton were named all-state from the show.

Also winning state championships were Sean Thornton and Jaden Brummond for their dramatic duet, "The Rabbit Hole." Both were named all-state.

Linch also was a state champion individually for her original monologue first-year script.

The Riverton group performance art project, an original production by Annette Thornton and the RHS advanced drama class, took second place, earning all-state recognition for Jace Flanagan and several others previously honored.

The humorous duet "Marvin's Room," performed by Linch and Parker Dodson, took second place, and Dodson joined the all-state list.

Also in the state runner-up position was the humorous monologue by Dallin Cooper, who was an all-state honoree.

Brummond's dramatic monologue was state runner-up, and Thomas Boyd was name dall-state for his work in the dramatic duet from John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," which he performed with Flanagan.

All told, 16 all-state distinctions were awarded among the seven top Riverotn High School actors.

Several of the winning performances will be staged for the public at the upcoming RHS Nights of the One Acts.
