No losses yet for Cougar girls after downing Rocky

Dec 9, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

The Wind River Lady Cougars are 5-0 after winning their home opener over Rocky Mountain 64-54.

They take their unbeaten streak to Big Horn County next weekend for the East/West Tournament against traditional powers Big Horn, Tongue River and Wright.

The Cougars started slow Saturday, just as they had in playing the Grizzlies the week before in Big Horn County, but rallied in the second half to pull away.

Wind River has a bevy of talented players this season, and the team's strength lies mainly off dribble penetration and in the paint.

Lexis Brown had an outstanding game on the low block, tallying 14 points, while Brett Groesbeck worked her short-range jumper to perfection and added a trey to lead the team with 16.

In the opening minutes the Cougars slowly built a lead behind the play of Brown and Macayla Arrington in the post, while Groesbeck and Josee Vogel added baskets off short jumpers and follow shots.

Rocky Mountain went to the post behind the play of senior Kallee Wilson. who led all scorers with 20.

Wind River led by six to open the second, but Rocky knotted the game twice at 21 and 23, with Shauna Loman hitting a pair of close-range shots and Rachael Allred converting at the free throw line.

Wind River rallied late in the quarter on baskets by Tory Thoman and Brown to lead by three at the break. Three more ties highlighted the third period before the Cougars broke open the game on a pair of long-range bombs.

Amanda C'Bearing drained the first trey with 1:49 left in the third quarter, then Lydia Johnson beat the buzzer with a towering, 26-foot shot to lift the Cougars to a 50-41 advantage.

Rocky Mountain packed it in defensively in the final period, but Groesbeck drained a trey with 5:23 left. She, Vogel and Brown scored down the stretch for the win.
