Wrangler girls cold from stripe in split with Burns, Lingle-Ft. Laramie

Dec 9, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Shooting in a foreign gym can sometimes be a challenge, even at the free-throw line. Shoshoni's girls experienced that but still picked up a split Friday night at the Burns tournament with a 45-43 win over the host Broncs and a 48-39 loss to Lingle-Ft. Laramie in the late game.

The split left the Wranglers at 3-2 on the season with a Saturday game scheduled against Pine Bluffs to conclude the tournament.

The Wranglers rolled to a 7-0 lead over Burns Friday afternoon, but the advantage quickly evaporated. They trailed by five at the half.

Cold free-throw shooting was a factor in the second period, and on the game the Wranglers hit just seven of 22 attempts from the stripe.

"We slowed down a little bit," Shoshoni head coach Max Mills said.

In the second half Shoshoni picked up the tempo and started to score in transition. When Burns was able to slow play the Wranglers took advantage of their taller lineup and took the ball inside.

Sisters Sarah and Olivia Thompson accounted for 16 points each, with most of those coming in the paint.

In the late game the height advantage shifted to Lingle in the form of the 6-1 all-state post Kyla Meyers. Meyers tallied 26 points in the paint and displayed great athleticism as she brought the ball up the floor against Shoshoni's full-court pressure as well.

"We just got outsized inside. Meyer owned the paint, and we were a bit slow with our double team," Mills said.

Against Linger, Shoshoni was plagued by unforced turnovers, with Lingle picking off late passes in the half-court.

Free-throw shooting was nearly as abysmal as the early game. SHS hit just eight of 22 from the line.

The 15-of-44 performance at the charity stripe in two games is a cause for concern.

"It's been a little big frustrating," Mills said. "We shoot about 40 free throws a night in practice."
