Wranglers hosting basketball invitational Friday, Saturday
Dec 13, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
The Shoshoni boys and girls basketball teams host the annual Wrangler Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Four teams are invited all from the Class 1-A ranks. Hanna Elk Mountain, Eden Farson, Upton and Meeteetse bring both their boys and girls teams to Wrangler gym.
Play opens Friday at 11:30 a.m., when the Lady Wranglers host Farson. The boys game follows immediately afterward between the same schools.
The Shoshoni girls enter the tournament with a 4-2, record while the boys are 2-4. Both squads opened the season in the Basin tournament in Big Horn County, then traveled to eastern Laramie County for the Burns invitational just last week.
The Shoshoni boys have shown marked improvement in each outing, and head coach Dan Martin is happy with his squad.
"I'm lucky to have such a great group of blue-collar kids who come to practice every day and work hard," Martin said. "We're getting better every week, and it's exciting to see the progress."
The Upton girls enter the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, while Meeteetse is winless in three outings. Hanna boasts a single three-point win over Dubois, and Farson is 2-1 after wins over Meeteetse and Dubois.
On the boys side, Hanna is the tallest team in 1-A with a lineup of 6-4, 6-5 and 6-7, but the Miners have just a single win over Glendo this season.
Farson is winless, suffering through three lopsided losses so far this year. Upton is 2-3, with four close games and a blowout of Northwest 1-A rival Hulett. Meeteetse is 2-1, with a surprisingly lopsided loss to the upstart Rock River Longhorns.
The tournament dates back to 1973 when it was a boys-only tournament combined with a wrestling tournament. There have been gaps in the tournament over the years with the present four team co-ed format dating to 1992.
Shoshoni has scored exciting wins over Pinedale, St. Stephen's, Kemmerer, Wright and Big Horn in years past and played well against Douglas and Wheatland.
Play continues through late Saturday evening.
