Rustler men 11-2 after dropping second on road

Dec 13, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College ended a stretch of men's basketball road games on a two-game losing streak after a 76-67 setback to Laramie County Community College Tuesday night in Cheyenne.

The game was the last one before a three-week Christmas break for the Rustlers.

CWC is 11-2 on the season. CWC lost to Casper College Saturday night.

"We have been on the road for the last month, and it took a toll on us in the second half with LCCC," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said. "We have had some guys banged up and hurt that have been playing through some injuries and sickness that will help us have Christmas break."

LCCC is 11-3 on the year. LCCC is in the Region IX south division and CWC plays in the north division.

Laramie guard Deshon Portley led all scorers at 29 points.

"LCCC is a very good team," Lindley said. "They have one of the best point guards in the country at the juco level on their team. He is very good as a freshman."

Armani Flannigan paced CWC with 16 points, and Tanner Newbold had 12.

Roozario Wiggins and Ryan Nemelka all made key shots to keep CWC in the game.

The next battle for CWC is Jan. 5 against Western Wyoming at Rustler Gym.

"Christmas break is at a great time for us with our injuries and all of our travel that we have had. It will be good to have a break," Lindley said. "Our kids are excited for Christmas and to get back for conference."

Western Wyoming is 3-10 on the season after being one of the top teams in the region in the last couple of seasons.

The Rustlers are 1-1 in the north division. The win was a victory at Northwest College in Powell.
