Dec 14, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorHeavyweight wrestler Dawson Steeds capped off a come-from-behind 34-33 Riverton High School victory Thursday night, pinning his Worland opponent in the final match of the night.
Steeds stuck Zach Logan at the 4:40 mark of the third period in Worland. Steeds had a couple of three-point near-falls in the second period.
"We had the guy pinned a couple of times," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "The kid did a nice job of fighting off his back. Dawson made a little mistake later in the match.
He got after it and took him down to his back to get the dual over."
The rally started for RHS when Casey Savage won an 8-2 decision over Oscor Diaz at 195 pounds. Riverton's Jacob Flesher pinned Casey Hernandez in 52 seconds in the 220-pound weight class.
RHS trailed the Warriors 33-19 on the scoreboard before the final three matches started.
"Casey did what was expected from him," Galey said. "He was in control for most of the match. Flesher came out there and beat one of their horses and put it in the hands of Dawson."
The Wolverines gave up six points on a forfeit in the 113-pound weight class.
In the Wyoming wrestling rankings, RHS is ranked No. 3 in Class 4-A, while Worland is No. 4 in Class 3-A.
"The atmosphere was great," Galey said. "Worland has a lot of tradition. I think that the win was a great way for us to start the weekend."
RHS started competition Friday in the two-day Battle of the Big Horn dual tournament in Worland.
"Right now, we just aren't at full speed," Galey said. "The thing we are encouraged about is getting younger guys some good experience."
The Wolverines were scheduled to dual Rock Springs, Billings Skyview, Mont., Lyman and Rawlins in pool play matches.

Riverton's Gavin Wilson pinned Connor Warner in a time of 1:19 mark for the first victory for the visiting team.
Ahren Wempen won a 7-3 decision to add to the point total for RHS over Kaden McEhinny at 132 pounds.
After three straight losses in the match, Rudy Batista put RHS back on track with a pin at 160 pounds.
T.J. Galey blanked Micky Olson 8-0 in the 170-pound weight class.
A key match in the later stages of a dual was Worland's Colby Wartman's 11-6 decision over Reece Prosser in the 182-pound weight class.
"Reece wrestled one of the best kids that Worland had," Galey said. "The difference was he was going to give up a major decision, but with 20 seconds left, Reece had an escape and a takedown. That was just a huge effort for Reece."
The victory put Worland ahead 33-19, but kept the Wolverines within striking distance.
