After Gillette loss, RHS boys winDec 16, 2012 Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
The Riverton Wolverines basketball team struggled early but responded late to win their second of three games in the Flaming Gorge Tournament held in Green River. Riverton outscored Union, Utah, 15-5 in the final period to notch a 49-36 win.
Thursday, Riverton started the tournament with a 60-51 win over Cheyenne East but, despite being tied at halftime, were blown out Friday by the current Class 4-A top-ranked Gillette Camels 83-54.
"We played well to finish the game out. Defensively, we are still having a lot of errors in terms of rotation. I think it's a lot of mental stuff right now. I think the kids played hard through the first three quarters, but we just didn't play well," RHS head coach Dick Quayle said about Saturday's win.
Riverton, 8-1, will not play again until after New Year's.
In another key game Saturday, Gillette beat Evanson 39-34 to finish the tournament with no losses. Evanston, which again strongly established themselves as a contender in the Class 4-A West along with the Wolverines, throttled Union, Utah, 51-34 and beat Vernal, Utah, 52-49 in its other tournament games.
"I think (the Gillette loss) was real hard on us but it is going to be a good thing. We are going to have to find out better ways to take care of the ball. We had way too many turnovers, and our shot selection was real quick. We are going to have to work on getting better shots and having teams play defense against us a little more," Quayle said.
In Saturdays game, Jordan Belville scored 11, and Xavier Webb and Kade Salisbury both had 10.
