Big wins for Shoshoni girls at Wrangler Invitational

Dec 16, 2012 - Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

SHOSHONI -- The Shoshoni girls routed all three opponents through the early afternoon of the annual Wrangler Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Wranglers blew out Farson 52-23 in the opener on Friday, then handed Upton its first loss of the season in a 64-44 win later in the day.

The Wranglers rolled all over mismatched Hanna-Elk Mountain 68-14 Saturday afternoon and played Meeteetse in the last game Saturday night.

Against Farson, Shoshoni's full-court pressure led to a 15-2 lead in the opening period, but the Wranglers cooled off in the second.

Full-court pressure in the third proved to be the difference in the game and any hope of a Pronghorn comeback disappeared against Shoshoni's superior team quickness.

Upton is a team that could contend in Class 1-A this season, but the Bobcats didn't match up well against Shoshoni. The Wranglers tallied 39 points in the opening half behind balanced scoring that saw four players in double figures, paced by 23 from sophomore Olivia Thompson.

Shoshoni's defense was a strength all weekend long, and it showed Saturday afternoon as the Wranglers built a huge 31-1 lead over a very young Hanna team.

The Miners tallied only two baskets on the entire night with 10 of their 14 points coming at the free throw line.

After holding Hanna to just one first period point the Wranglers pitched a shutout in the third, with Hanna not scoring in the second half until just five minutes remained in the game.

Shoshoni hosts Burlington on Thursday and Rocky Mountain on Friday to finish the pre-Christmas portion of the season.
