Dec 16, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Staff WriterIt was an eye-opening weekend for the previously unbeaten Wind River girls. The Lady Cougars dropped their first game of the basketball season in a tough two-day tournament at Big Horn and Tongue River High Schools in Sheridan County.
Wind River opened the tournament Friday with a nail-biting 60-59 win over Big Horn, then got a dose of reality against powerhouse Tongue River in a 73-38 walloping at the hands of the Eagles in their opening game Saturday. In the late game the Cougars rallied to defeat a solid Wright team 71-57. Wind River now stands 7-1 on the season.
In their opener against the Rams, Wind River trailed early in spite of three first period baskets by Josee Vogel. The Cougars rallied in the second with a 23-point outpouring, the best of the season so far, to take a five-point lead at the half.
The Cougar press clicked in the second quarter, with Amanda C'Bearing and Lydia Johnson adding long-range shots from beyond the arc. C'Bearing drained a pair of treys en route to an eight-point quarter, while Johnson added seven in the decisive stanza.
The game should not have been that close, but the Cougars were dismal at the free=-throw line, hitting just eight of 23 attempts from the stripe.
Big Horn didn't fare much better in the final minutes, missing the opportunity to pull out the win with six missed charities in the final minutes.
The Cougars face Class 2-A Northwest favorite Thermopolis at home next Friday in their final game of the pre-Christmas season. The Bobcats also have a single loss at the hands of Tongue River and boast wins over Wright and Big Horn, making the contest a very interesting battle between potential top seeds from the western region.
