Dec 18, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorArhen Wempen and T.J.R00;Galey brought home the championship hardware from the Battle of the Big Horn.
Riverton High School wrestlers Arhen Wempen and T.J. Galey captured "Best of the Best" individual titles Saturday at the end of the Battle of the Big Horn tournament in Worland.
Wempen won his title in the 132-pound weight class. Galey came out on top at 170 pounds. The "Best of the Best" featured the top wrestlers in each weight class from the team duals in the two-day event.
"Both of them guys had really good weekends," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "Honestly, it's things that you expect out of those guys. They had a lot of fun doing it. They stepped up and got the job done."
Galey and Wempen finished the weekend with 8-0 individual records.
Lander's Ty Alexander was Best of the Best at 120 pounds, pinning Evan Tumquest, Billings (Mont.) Senior at the 1:33 mark (see related story).
In preliminary dual matches, Riverton knocked off Lyman High School (48-33), Rock Springs (48-21), and a combined Kemmerer/Thermopolis team (69-12).
Billings Skyview, Mont., beat the Wolverines 44-31.
In the seventh-place match, the Wolverines edged Sheridan 38-32.
Powell won the tournament, and Billings Skyview was second.
Wempen won a 5-3 decision over Powell's Andrew Feller in the finals.
"Arhen was in control the whole time in the finals," Galey said. "Coaching-wise, you don't have to worry too much when you are in those kind of situations."
Galey won a 3-1 overtime decision over Jacob Beck of Lovell.
Galey scored a takedown in the extra period to clinch his title. Beck is No. 1 in the wrestling rankings in Class 2-A. Galey is ranked No. 1 in 4-A.
"We knew that he was going to be a tough kid," coach Galey said.
"T.J. managed to take him down in overtime and got the win right there."
Riverton's Gavin Wilson posted a 7-0 mark at 120 pounds.
Wilson lost out on a tiebreaking system for his spot in the finals. "Gavin wrestled super good all weekend," Galey said.
"There is not a lot that you can do about that (the tiebreaker). You feel bad for Gavin because he probably deserved to be there."
Wilson is ranked No. 2 in Class 4-A.
"Gavin is wrestling with a lot of confidence," Galey said. "He is a physical guy at that weight."
Rudy Batista put together a 6-1 mark at 160 pounds.
"Rudy got caught in a headlock against a guy from Natrona," Galey said. "I really thought that Rudy, in two of the matches, wrestled as good as I have seen him wrestle in his high school career."
Galey liked the way RHS wrestlers Casey Savage (195 pounds), Reece Prosser (182) and Kyle Page (182) performed in the duals.
Page went to a different team in the duals so he could get varsity experience.
"I really like what those three are doing right now," Galey said. "They are going in the right direction. They are only going to make us tougher by the end of the year."
The Wolverines start the Class 4-A West conference Tuesday night at Casper Natrona. RHS is ranked No. 3 in Class 4-A Wyoming wrestling rankings. The Casper Natrona Mustangs are in the No. 4 slot.
"The bottom line is that we are going to have to have some guys step up," Galey said. "Once again, we are not going to be a full speed. Anytime that you go to Natrona you know that they are going to be tough."
Galey said he hoped Batista could "get revenge" in Tuesday's match against the Natrona wrestler who beat him Saturday.
Rock Springs, Green River, Evanston, Kelly Walsh, are the other teams in the league.
