Dec 18, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorTy Alexander built on his fast start for Lander Valley High School by winning the "Best of the Best" wrestling title at 120 pounds Saturday at the Battle of the Big Horn.
The finals victory by Alexander capped off an 8-0 mark in Worland.
Alexander was 7-0 at the Brave Brawl tournament the week before at Star Valley High School. "When you start racking up 15 wins in a row, that is pretty good," LVHS coach Nick Fulton said.
In the finals, Alexander won a 7-3 decision Saturday over Evan Turnquist of Billings (Mont.) Senior High School.
"Ty had a nice escape with about 45 seconds left and a takedown with about 15 seconds left in the first period," Fulton said. "Those were nice scores at the end of the period, which is something that we really need to focus on as team."
In the second period, Alexander had a three-point near-fall to increase his cushion.
"Ty is pretty good on top and was able to get some near falls," Fulton said. "He held him on his back for about a minute and 15 seconds. It was just a solid win for Ty."
In preliminary dual matches, Powell beat the Tigers 57-21, and LVHS lost to Rawlins 49-30 and Sheridan 35-33.
"Individually, I thought that we performed pretty well," Fulton said. "As a team, I thought that we wrestled pretty well in certain duals. Our young kids are showing some improvement, then our older kids continue to rack up the wins. I thought that it was an improvement over the weekend before."
After pool play, the Tigers won the silver bracket title. The best teams were put in the gold bracket.
LVHS beat Rawlins (42-36) in the first-place match of the silver bracket.
"We are still young and have some holes. When we get through Christmas break and get some kids healthy and kids down in some weights I'm pretty excited about the way that the team is shaping out," Fulton said. "
Lander's Andrew Von Rein had a 7-0 mark in his weight class, but didn't make a spot in the finals under the tournament's tiebreaking format. Von Rein was in the 126-pound weight class."Andrew had a good weekend," Fulton said.
Jake Miller went 6-1 at 152 pounds.
His only setback was to a Cody wrestler."We are working on getting a little redemption on that match," Fulton said.
Jason Hanson (182 pounds) and Ross Sloss (220) finished with 6-1 marks for LVHS.
"Jason got a huge win over a Sheridan kid that was third in the state last year," Fulton said. "Jason is really coming along.
He is building some confidence. I think that he will be right in the thick of things. Ross really had a nice weekend for us."
