SHS girls win low-scoring game
Dec 21, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
The win gives the Wrangler girls a season sweep over Burlington.
SHOSHONI -- Shoshoni moved to 9-2 on the girls basketball season with a 34-21 win over visiting Class 1-A Burlington Thursday night.
The win gives the Wranglers a season sweep over the Huskies this season, but the second time wasn't nearly as easy as the first.
Shoshoni played without sophomore point guard and outside shooting specialist Kiyana Martin, who is sidelined for an indefinite period with a knee injury suffered last week in Shoshoni's home tournament.
While the offense wasn't nearly as crisp as previous games, the defense was tenacious and forced dozens of Burlington turnovers.
The first two minutes were scoreless, as turnovers dominated the pace of the game. Wrangler senior Natalee Goff broke the ice with a 3-pointer with 6:00 left on the opening period clock, then added another trey from the opposite side of the court 45 seconds later. A post move by Kolbi Pickinpaugh raised the margin to 8-0 and Burlington head coach Jerry Patrick called a quick time out.
Shelby Nicholson hit a follow shot at 4:48 to put the Huskies on the board.
Shoshoni's offense slowed, and Burlington played even through the second. The Wranglers held an 18-12 advantage at intermission.
Burlington scored the first four points of the third to close the game to 18-16, but Shoshoni rallied on another trey from Goff and never looked back.
The Wranglers scored just six in the final period on baskets from Celsey Martin, Olivia Thompson and Goff but held the Huskies scoreless in the final eight minutes of the game.
Goff led all scorers with 11 points.
Shoshoni hosts Class 2-A Northwest Rocky Mountain on Friday.
