Lander Valley High School put down seven pins Thursday night in a 54-30 non-conference wrestling victory over Casper Kelly Walsh at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Kelly Walsh Trojans had five pins. There wasn't one match that lasted the full three periods.

The Trojans are the No. 6 ranked team in Class 4-A. LVHS is the No. 6 ranked squad in Class 3-A.

The victory was the home opener for LVHS.

"It was one of those duals where their good kids matched up against some of our more inexperienced kids," LVHS coach Nick Fulton said. "Our good kids matched up with some of their inexperienced kids. It turned out that the matches were lopsided. It's just all about matchups in dual settings."

LVHS and Kelly Walsh participated in the 16-team Lander Invitational Friday and Saturday at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

LVHS freshman Mark McConnell and sophomore Talon Connell made a successful home varsity debut against the Trojans.

McConnell pinned Levi Kensi in a time of 3:40 at 106 pounds.

"We are really excited about Mark's ability in the future," Fulton said. "He is getting better every week. He is only weighing about 100 pounds."

McConnell is one of the fastest 106-pounders on the mat in Class 3-A.

"Mark is a quick kid," Fulton said. "He is very intelligent out on the mat. He is just a hard worker. We are really excited to have a freshman be in the room for four years. We look for great things out of him."

Connell had a short night after a pin in 1:47 over Nico Clark in the 170-pound weight class.

"We are really happy for Talon," Fulton said. "We have bounced him back between junior varsity and varsity. You could just see his confidence building throughout the match. That was a big win that should build his confidence and our big win for our team."

Jacob Miller had a pin in 1:35 at 152 pounds for LVHS. Ross Sloss won the fastest pin for in 56 seconds in the 220-pound weight class.

Keegan Wells (heavyweight) and Ty Alexander (120 pounds) added two more pins for LVHS.
