Late steal and bucket give SHS girls 35-33 win

Dec 23, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

SHOSHONI -- The Shoshoni Lady Wranglers stole a hard-fought victory over visiting Rocky Mountain Friday night 35-33 after trailing by a big margin early in the game.

The win lifts Shoshoni to 8-2 on the season, with a key Southwest 2-A match up against Wyoming Indian coming on the first Friday of 2013.

Nothing went well for Shoshoni in the opening minutes against Rocky. The Wranglers tallied just four points in the opening period on a jump shot by Celsey Martin and single free throws from Kolbi Pickinpaugh and Sarah Thompson. Rocky led 8-1 to open the game.

The teams traded baskets in a slow-paced second period before the Wrangler defense kicked in to open the third. Kallee Wilson scored the Grizzlies' only points in the quarter on a layup and following foul shot.

Shoshoni's offense finally came with a decidedly sibling look in sisters Sarah and Olivia Thompson. Each scored a pair of baskets, and Sarah added a free throw to lift the Wranglers to a tenuous one-point lead going into the final period.

Neither team could gain an advantage in the final minutes.

With the score tied 33-33 with 30 seconds to play Rocky began a deliberate offense intending to set up a final shot. Olivia Thompson stepped in front of a Grizzly pass and outran the defense for the winning layup with 17 seconds left.

Rocky quickly ran the offense but missed the shot before the buzzer.

Wilson paced Rocky with 16, while Sarah Thompson's 11 led the Wranglers. Olivia Thompson finished with nine.
