No contest in Shootout opener; Chiefs win 92-36

Dec 27, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

ETHETE -- It was a tough bus ride for the St. Stephen's Eagles on icy 17-Mile Road Thursday morning, but the heat that awaited the Eagles at the Wyoming Indian gym wasn't what they were looking for.

Wyoming Indian walloped Wind River Reservation rival St. Stephen's 92-36 in opening round pool play in the Fremont County Shootout at Ethete.

The Chiefs were primed and ready to open the contest taking a huge 25-6 lead after one and never looking back.

Wyoming Indian's half-court pressure was too much for the Eagles and it fueled the Chief's patented transition game with easy outlet passes for quick baskets.

Treys abounded for the Chiefs as they combined for seven total on the game with three coming from senior leader Alvin Spoonhunter. Spoonhunter led all scorers with 25 points in limited action.

At times the game resembled the pickup contests played during lunchtime at both schools, with no-look passes, back-handed passes and deft wraparound moves on both ends of the floor.

The only question remaining after a dominating opening half for the Chiefs was when the 40-point mercy rule would come into effect.

Spoonhunter hit a baseline 3-pointer with 5:17 left in the third, and the clock ran without interruption from then on, aside from the break between the third and fourth periods.

The Chiefs advanced to a late night game at 8:30 against the Riverton sophomores.

Wilson Clifford and Tristan Gardner both had excellent opening periods with Gardner raining in a pair of treys and Clifford displaying blazing speed in the open court for quick transition baskets. Clifford finished with 16 and Gardner with 11.

For the Eagles Sam Teran paced the effort with a dozen points. Lakota Oldman added nine.

The Eagles played the Riverton sophomores at 4 p.m.
