RHS wrestlers head to Douglas; Beau Batista back on mat

Jan 4, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Beau Batista will return to the wrestling lineup for Riverton High School this weekend after being out with an injury for nearly a month

Batista, a senior, hurt his shoulder during the Rapid City, S.D., Invitational Dec. 7-8.

RHS began the Shane Shatto Invitational Friday afternoon in Douglas.

Batista is ranked No. 3 in the 152-pound weight class in the latest Wyoming wrestling rankings.

"Beau is a competitor," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "It has been hard for him to sit and watch his teammates. He brings a lot of experience."

Batista has been a starter for the Wolverines the last three years.

"The biggest thing is that individually we know that he is tough," Galey said. "You just can't replace his leadership. With that being said, it will be really good for our guys to have him back."

Christmas practice

Galey said RHS scaled back practice during the Christmas break.

"We only went for an hour and half every time," Galey said. "We tried to up the intensity a little bit but shorten the time. The biggest reason behind that is I wanted to get them as much rest as I could. December was just brutal for us."

The Wolverines last competed at the Lander Invitational on Dec. 20-21 at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

"We added an extra tournament," Galey said. "I thought that at the Lander Invitational it showed a little bit. I thought that we looked a little tired. We did lose some close matches."

Rudy Batista and Arhen Wempen won individual titles in Lander. Batista placed first in the 160-pound title and Wempen claimed the 132-pound championship.

"We had some guys that wrestled really well in Lander," Galey said.

Steeds change

Dawson Steeds will wrestle this weekend in the 220-pound weight class.

Steeds had climbed into the No. 4 position in the Class 4-A heavyweight division.

"We just wanted to see how Dawson looked at 220 pounds," Galey said. "I don't know if we are going to keep Dawson there."

Galey said Steeds is an undersized heavyweight.

"At times, he is giving up to 45 pounds with the other heavyweights," Galey said.

Douglas tournament

Powell, Douglas, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East and Casper Natrona are going to be the strong teams in the two-day and double-elimination tournament in Douglas.

"Douglas is not going to be easy," Galey said. "We are going to get right back in the heat of the battle."

The Douglas tournament will feature a junior varsity and varsity division.

"We will send some of our younger guys to the junior varsity tournament," Galey said.

Riverton's varsity lineup this weekend is Gavin Wilson (120 pounds), Joey Roseno (126), Wempen (132), T.J. Turner (138), Tyler Allen (145), Beau Batista (152), Rudy Batista (160), T.J. Galey and Chris Holcomb (170), Casey Savage (195), Steeds (220) and Riley Reichert (220).
