Jan 4, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe Riverton Wolverines boys basketball team jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back en route to an easy 81-43 win over Class 2-A Thermopolis during first-day play at the Bill Strannigan East-West Basketball Challenge.
The win sets up a good class Class 4-A showdown Friday night in Wolverine Gym when Riverton (8-1), currently ranked third in Wyoming, battles Laramie (7-1), the state's second-ranked team. Game time is 7 p.m.
In other first-day boys varsity games, Laramie beat Evanston for the second time this season, 52-41, and Kelly Walsh topped Sheridan 54-41 in games played at Central Wyoming College and at the Riverton Middle School.
The Wolverines will play Sheridan Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Wolverine Gym to finish their weekend.
In Thursday's game, Xavier Webb led all scorers with 23, and Jordan Belville and Seth Quayle, Riverton's inside one-two punch, also hit double figures with 17 and 15 points respectively.
"I think Friday's game is going to be really even. They have two good guards. It's a little different team from what Laramie had last year. They are not so much ball control. We have been playing these guys since fourth grade. We know who they are, and they know who we are," RHS head coach Dick Quayle said.
The Plainsmen are a senior-heavy team whose only loss came in Dec. 13 against host Greeley Central (70-66) in the opening game of the Greeley Invitational Tournament.
