Poor shooting and turnovers continued to plague the Riverton Lady Wolverines basketball team Thursday night. RHS dropped its first game in the Bill Strannigan East-West Challenge 39-27 to the Class 2-A Thermopolis Lady Bobcats in Wolverine Gym.

In other first-day girls varsity games played at Central Wyoming College and Riverton Middle School, the East dominated the West. Top ranked Sheridan blitzed Casper Kelly Walsh 47-26 and fifth-ranked Laramie dropped Evanston 44-28.

The Lady Wolverines will continue play Friday against Laramie in Wolverine Gym. Earlier this year, Laramie topped Riverton 77-49 after jumping out to an early 18-1 lead. Friday's game is set for 5:30 p.m.

RHS will conclude the three-day tournament Saturday with a noon game in Wolverine Gym against Sheridan.

Thursday's game saw Riverton connect on just 28 percent of its field goal attempts. RHS only shot 1-7 from the charity stripe while committing 25 turnovers.

"Until we can put the ball in the basket, we'll have our difficulties. We lost condition over Christmas, and that was noticeable," Lady Wolverine head coach Ron Porter said.

Kiley Ridgway was Riverton's leading scorer with six points. Savannah Salisbury and Camey Fegler each added five.

Riverton trailed by just three at the half (22-19), but Thermopolis outscored the Lady Wolverines 17-8 in the second half to get the win.

"I think there are moments where we played OK. I really believe we should be a much better defensive team, and our kids do too," Porter said.
