Riverton boys roll past No. 2 Laramie, Sheridan; now 11-1

Eager to remain in the conversation as one of Wyoming's top Class 4-A boys basketball teams, the Riverton Wolverines used an explosive second quarter to dominate second-ranked Laramie 66-52 Friday night in Wolverine Gym.

Then on Saturday, despite being down by 10 in the second quarter and one at the half, Riverton broke loose in the third quarter to cruise to a 69-47 win over the Sheridan Broncs. It was the second win over Sheridan this season for Riverton.

The two wins Friday and Saturday, added to Thursday's destruction of Thermopolis, gave Riverton a perfect 3-0 record in the Bill Strannigan East-West Challenge.

The Wolverines are now an 11-1 on the year heading into their game Tuesday in Lander. In December, Riverton crushed the Tigers 69-44 in Wolverine Gym.

Next Saturday, the Wolverines travel to to Powell to complete their pre-conference schedule.

In other games in the East-West Challenger on Friday and Saturday, Sheridan topped Evanston 65-46, Kelly Walsh beat Class 2-A Thermopolis 69-39, Laramie beat Kelly Walsh in overtime 50-47, and Evanston stopped Thermopolis 56-47.

On Friday night, the Wolverines outscored the Laramie Plainsmen 24-13 in the second quarter to take control of the game, and they did it primarily inside the blocks with some timely sharp shooting from outside.

Seth Quayle had a game-high 20, and Jordan Belville added 10 more.

"Defensively our play turned things, and offensively we got the ball inside and got easy baskets. That's the name of the game. Get easy baskets," RHS head coach Dick Quayle said.

Xavier Webb added 19 against Laramie, including four 3-pointers.

As if Friday's 30-point performance from Riverton's bigs wasn't good enough, Belville and Quayle scored 24 and 13 points, respectively, inside the paint to power a Riverton comeback and victory Saturday.

Webb added 17 points in the win over the Broncs.

Despite being down one at halftime and with starting point guard Kade Salisbury in foul trouble, Riverton displayed its depth with solid play from sophomores Chris Quayle, Brandon Fullerton and Anthony Condie. Quayle's three 3-point shots in the third quarter helped Riverton grab and extend the lead and Fullerton's two free-throws, solid defensive play with a blocked shot and a steal, and a full-court rocket pass to a streaking Webb for an easy layup gave Riverton a 54-39 lead with 6:31 remaining.

Seth Quayle dominated the inside defensively and was credited with four blocked shots.

"It was great. Our young kids played really well today (Saturday). I thought Brandon (Fullerton), Myron (Oldman), Anthony (Condi,e) and Chris (Quayle) all gave us really good minutes today and I was real happy for them," coach Quayle said.
