Rustler women battle into third overtime before losing

Western Wyoming's Theresa Allgaier opened the third overtime with back-to-back 3-pointers to help the visiting team outlast Central Wyoming College 69-66 Saturday night in a Region IX North women's basketball contest at Rustler Gym in Riverton.

Western Wyoming's Lady Mustangs hit three free throws in the final seconds to capture the marathon game that lasted almost three hours.

CWC's Stephanie Smith pulled in 21 rebounds in the loss before she fouled out in the third overtime. Smith scored six points and had three blocked shots.

The Lady Mustangs improved to 3-0 in conference play. The CWC Rustlers fell to 0-3 in league play.

CWC hosts Sheridan College in a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rustler Gym. The men's game will follow the women's.

In mens' action late Saturday, the Rustlers beat Western 58-55.

Western Wyoming 69, CWC 66 3OT

The Rustlers built a 31-21 lead at the first half, but CWC couldn't hold on to the advantage in the second half. The Lady Mustangs knotted the score at 39-39 early in the second half.

Western took the lead at 50-48 on a 3-pointer from Shanna Halalilo.

Elise Keller hit two free throws for CWC with 16 seconds left to send the game into the first overtime.

In the extra period, Western build a 54-50 lead, but CWC came back to knot the score at 54-54 on two free throws from Emily Smith to second it to the second overtime.

Western jumped out to a 58-54 lead after four free throws from Halalilo.

CWC's Lauren Bond and Keller had one free throw apiece to tie it again at 58-58.

In the third overtime, Western took control and held on for the league win.

Keller finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tina Hosea had 13 points. Emily Smith added 10 points for CWC.
