Cougar girls take hard-fought win Saturday over Shoshoni

Jan 6, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

PAVILLION -- A touch of Campbell County-style basketball descended on Pavillion Saturday afternoon as the Wind River Cougars manhandled the visiting Shoshoni Wrangler girls 76-59 in Southwest 2-A conference action.

The win moves the Cougars to 1-0 in conference play, while the Wranglers are 0-2 after falling to Wyoming Indian at home on Friday.

Wind River played very physical basketball, particularly in the second half, jostling, shoving and hip-checking the Wranglers in their half court offense. Shoshoni had the opportunity to compensate at the free throw line but hit only 17 of 35 attempts from the line.

The game opened evenly with Shoshoni rolling through Wind River's full court zone press for easy transition baskets.

Olivia Thompson, Kolbi Pickinpaugh and Natalee Goff all took turns with quick outlet passes to easily break Wind River's pressure for easy baskets.

Shoshoni led for much of the opening period, but a switch by Wind River coach Justin Walker from zone to man pressure proved to be the difference in the game.

While the Wranglers were more than willing to pass through the Cougar zone, they were hesitant to clear out against man pressure ,and no one stepped up to dribble through the full-court defense.

Wind River was balanced in the second quarter, with Amanda C'Bearing penetrating Shoshoni's half-court zone on dribble drives, Josee Vogel hitting from the perimeter, and Lexus Brown battling in the post.

The score was tied at the half, but Wind River had all the answers in the third period. The Cougars roared out of the intermission on excellent outside shooting from freshman Lexa Wagon. Wagon finished the game with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, all scored in the second half.

C'Bearing had a dazzling second half passing the ball as well as running the break. With just 13 seconds remaining in the third, C'Bearing tossed a high, arching pass over the top of Shoshoni's extended 1-3-1 to a wide-open Bret Groesbeck for an easy layup.

Groesbeck hit a trey in the final period and Vogel, Lydia Johnson and C'Bearing released early for easy transition baskets when a tired Shoshoni team didn't get back on defense.

Sisters Sarah and Olivia Thompson battled in the low post, but each time they closed within a few feet of the basket they were fouled hard prior to shooting. The duo attempted 16 of Shoshoni's 22 shots from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter alone.

Olivia Thompson led Shoshoni with 2,1 while Sarah Thompson added 13. Goff scored 10.

For Wind River C'Bearing led a very balanced attack with 18. Groesbeck scored 13, Brown 11 and Wagon nine.

Wind River plays Wyoming Indian for the second time in just two week this Friday, but this one counts for conference placement.

Shoshoni loads the bus for the long run to Kemmerer and Big Piney this weekend.
