Riverton girls go winless in Strannigan tournament

Jan 6, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The games became more difficult as the weekend wore on for the Riverton Lady Wolverines basketball team playing in the Bill Strannigan East-West Challenge in Wolverine Gym.

After falling to Thermopolis on Thursday, Riverton fell behind early but played well in the final three quarters in a 54-42 loss to fifth-ranked Laramie on Friday.

The top-ranked Sheridan Lady Broncs outscored Riverton 50-15 in the first half Saturday on their way to an easy 66-24 win.

Camey Fegler netted 11 Friday, and Savannah Salisbury scored 10, including two 3-pointers, to lead Riverton. Kiley Ridgway scored 11 in Saturday's loss.

In other Friday and Saturday games in the tournament, Sheridan topped Evanston 39-23, Thermopolis beat Kelly Walsh 52-31, Laramie defeated Kelly Walsh 57-47, and Evanston beat Thermopolis 41-27.

The Lady Wolverines will travel to Lander on Tuesday and try to repeat their 50-42 win over the Lady Tigers earlier this season.

RHS head coach Ron Porter was again impressed with Sheridan's ability to attack his Lady Wolverines.

"They do everything well, and they understand the complete game. It's a couple of diagonal passes and a layup," Porter said.

Porter said his team will continue to look forward and try and improve on the little things that can make his team better and added the he believes his team can be competitive when Class 4-A West conference play starts in two weeks.

"We have a lot to look forward to. The most important part of our season is at the end of February. This will only help our chances down the road," Porter said.
