Virginia G. Van Velson

Virginia G. Van Velson, 88, formerly of Riverton, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at the Cypress Glen Nursing Home in Port Arthur, Texas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.

Virginia Sgrignoli was born May 17, 1923, in Denver to Nicholas and Josephine (Route) Sgrignoli.

She married E.E. "Van" Van Velson on Feb. 7, 1944, in Denver. For 33 years they made their home in Riverton, raising three sons.

Mr. Van Velson was an instrumental band teacher in the Riverton public school system, and Mrs. Van Velson was a housewife who was active in the community as a member of the Progressive Women's Club and St. Margaret Catholic Church. She was also an Avon sales representative for 20 years. Her family said she enjoyed dancing every Saturday at the Elks Club.

Mrs. Van Velson was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, E.E. "Van" Van Velson; her mother, father and a sister, Clara Hasselbach.

Survivors include her sons, Jim Van Velson and wife Susan of Gibsonia, Pa., Gary Van Velson and wife Jann of Spokane, Wash., and Tom Van Velson and wife Kathy of Nederland, Texas; a sister, Joanne Thaler and husband Ron of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; six grandchildren, Maria Brouse and husband Dennis of Lancaster, Pa., Chris Van Velson and wife Heather of Houston, Erica Smith and husband Jeff of Port Arthur, Texas, Suzanne Levels and husband Jamey of Austin, Texas, Todd Van Velson of Houston, and Zak Van Velson of Spokane, Wash.; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678.
