Jan 11, 2013 - StaffKathryn Gay, formerly of Riverton, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa. She was 92 years old.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Davis Funeral Home of Riverton, with Pastor Mark Thurman officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton. A viewing will be 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Davis Funeral Home.
Emma Kathryn Hall Gay was born March 27, 1920, in Hoisington, Kan., the daughter of Robert and Viola (Fitzgerald) Hall. Her grandparents pioneered and homesteaded near Hoisington, Kan., coming from Illinois in a covered wagon. When she was younger, she experienced the dust bowls of Kansas and the Depression years. She graduated from Hoisington High School in 1938.
She married George Raymond Gay on May 1, 1940, in Hoisington, Kan., and they made their home in Russell, Kan. In 1946, they were transferred by Standard Oil and Gas to Wyoming. Over a period of 38 years they made their homes in Casper, Lander, Winkleman Dome, Riverton, Beaver Creek, Midwest, Cody and back to Riverton. In 2003, Mrs. Gay moved to Longmont, Colo., to be near her daughter Kathleen. In 2006, she moved to Woodbine, Iowa, to be near her daughter Ramona.
She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church. She was a 50-plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as a Worthy Matron of the Riverton chapter and Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Wyoming from 1977-78. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, Sahida Temple, in Sheridan and Past Matrons Club of Riverton. She also served on many local organizations over the years.
Her family said she was a dedicated homemaker for her family, loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and boating with her family. She also enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, tole painting, reading, crocheting and vacationing on cruise ships.
She is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen Bechtel and her husband John of Longmont, Colo., Ramona Stephany and her husband Robert of Woodbine, Iowa, and Jane Spence and Terry Johnson of Central Point, Ore.; grandchildren Brenda Marler, Ann Bolders, Ray Reeb, Laura Ranz, Troy Reeb, Lana Spence and Tara Spence; great-grandchildren Elvis, Trey, Spenser, Parker, Tyler, Joshua and Alexa; sister Shirley Underwood and her husband Duane of Dry Ridge, Ky.; niece Terri Grimshaw; nephews Randy and Bob Underwood; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George Gay in 1978; and brother Elmer Hall.
