'Maria Stuarda' showing at Lander library

Jan 14, 2013 From staff reports

"Maria Stuarda," Lander Met Opera's next presentation Saturday, Jan. 19, will provide a rare opportunity to hear outstanding bel canto singing by American mezzo soprano Joyce DiDinato, joined by the new South African soprano Eliza van den Heevan.

The tragic conflict between Queen Elizabeth of England and her rival for the throne, Mary, Queen of Scots, is played out in this Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti opera, which premiered New Year's Eve at the Metropolitan Opera.

This new production received great praise from the New York press for both the production and the extraordinary singing, especially from the two sopranos.

The New York Times music critic praised DiDinato's singing as "a model of singing in which all components of the art form -- technique, sound, color, nuance, diction -- come together in service to expression and eloquence."

The opera begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Fremont County Library, 220 Amoretti Lander.
