Forfeits costly in Lander's loss on mat to Worland

Ross Sloss pulled off an upset for Lander Valley High School at 220 pounds, but the Tiger wrestlers didn't have enough power to knock off the Worland Warriors in a dual at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Warriors won the match 45-30 on Thursday night in a Class 3-A contest between two ranked schools.

LVHS forfeited 12 points to Worland in open weight classes at 113 pounds and 120 pounds.

The Tigers entered the dual ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 3-A.

The Warriors are No. 4.

LVHS started the Tournament of Champions Friday in Vernal, Utah.

The tournament featured some of the top teams from Utah, Colorado and Wyoming in the two-day and double-elimination tournament. Look for results this week.

Worland 45, Lander 30

(Thursday night)

Before Thursday's dual, Worland's Casey Hernandez was No. 1 in the state, and Sloss checked at No. 6 in the Class 3-A in the 220-pound division.

Sloss scored two points on a takedown in the first period and scored two more on a reversal in the second period.

Hernandez had two points on a reversal and one point on an escape, but Sloss won the contest 4-3.

Lander's Jacob Miller at 152 pounds and Jason Hanson in the 195-pound division had pins in the first period.

In the heavyweight match, Kegan Wells pinned Worland's Zach Logan in 30 seconds.

At 106 pounds, Lander's Kyle Carey blanked Mitchell Rothleutner 3-0.

Carey recorded two points on a takedown in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Carey added one more point on an escape for his victory.

In the 120-pound division, Ty Alexander pinned Conor Warner in a minute.

The victory was Alexander's 21st win in a row.

In a battle of ranked wrestlers at 128 pounds,

Worland's Justin Lewton took a 7-4 decision against Andrew Von Rein.

Lewton is rated No. 1 and Von Rein stands No. 2.

160 pounds -- Austin Beck, Worland, pinned Talon Connell, 3:10.

170 pounds -- Mikey Osbon, Worland, won by forfeit.

182 pounds -- Jason Hanson, Lander, pinned Oscar Diaz, 1:51.

195 pounds -- Colby Wartman, Worland, pinned Robert Sloss, 4:04.

220 pounds -- Robert Sloss, Lander, dec. Casey Hernandez, 4-3.

285 pounds -- Kegan Wells, Lander, pinned Zach Logan, :30 seconds.

106 pounds - Kyle Carey, Lander, dec. Mitchell Rothleutner, 3-0.

113 pounds -- Chase Anderson, Worland, won by forfeit.

120 pounds -- Ty Alexander, Lander, pinned Conor Warner, 1:00.

126 pounds -- Justin Lewton, dec. Andrew Von Rein, 7-4.

132 pounds -- Kaden McElhinny, Worland, pinned Ben McKinney.

138 pounds -- Coltin Hopkins, Worland, pinned Noah Rohrbacher, 51 seconds.

145 pounds -- Jason Beck, Worland, pinned Dennis Meeker, 3:25.
