CWC women still winless in Region IX

Jan 17, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College remained winless in the Region IX women's basketball conference after suffering a 61-52 loss Wednesday night at nationally ranked Gillette College.

Gillette College holds on to the No. 21 spot in the top-25 junior college women's basketball poll. Gillette College moved to 4-2 in conference play. CWC dropped to 0-5 in league play and 7-11 on the season.

The CWC Rustlers previous lost to Western Wyoming Community College and Sheridan College in tight games.

The Western setback went three overtimes.

"Again, I thought that we played well enough to win a 38-minute game," CWC women's coach Serol Stauffenberg said. "Unfortunately, we made some mistakes that cost us."

Kaylee Walker led CWC in the scoring department with 12 points. Elise Keller and Tina Hosea scored nine points apiece. Gillette won the rebounding war 46-36.

"We had a chance to tie or take the lead with roughly two minutes left, and they made shots and we didn't," Stauffenberg said. "We made a few mistakes defensively in the closing minutes that didn't help."

CWC plays at 3 p.m. Saturday vs. Dawson Community College at Rustler Gym.

Dawson is 8-9 overall, but 1-5 in conference.

"We need to get a win," Stauffenberg said. "Close doesn't count this time of year. Dawson will bring the best team they have had in a while."

Dawson recently lost to Casper College by two points.
