Deaths from man-made causes all up for 2012
Jan 20, 2013 - By Eric Blom, Staff Writer
Coroner Ed McAuslan made a somber report Jan. 15 to the Fremont County Commission.
The rates of accidental deaths, suicide, homicide and motor vehicle deaths in the county were all higher in 2012 than the national average, though the total instances of some of those events decreased from 2011 figures.
The number of suicides in 2011 was 18, tying a record set in 1985 and matched in 2006.
The results of pending investigations could add to the total for 2011 to set a new record.
The suicide total is four more than 2011 and nearly four times the national average for the county's population of about 40,000.
Total deaths by homicide reached eight in 2012. That number also is almost four times the national average but is less than half of the 23 homicide deaths recorded in 2011.
