Close game in Rock Springs, but Riverton girls fall short
Jan 20, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
The Riverton Lady Wolverines played true to form on the road Saturday afternoon against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. RHS fell behind early and kept fighting.
This time, though, the girls had a chance to win late. As it was, the Lady Tigers made free throws down the stretch and topped Riverton 44-40 in both teams' first Class 4-A West game.
The Lady Wolverines had a shot to win with 25 seconds to play even though they played without starter Bree Olson and key contributor Jensyn Pettit who couldn't play because of illness.
Kiley Ridgway led Riverton with 14 points, going 8-9 from the free throw line, and Camey Fegler added 10.
If only the Lady Wolverines could start quick sometime.
"We gave a much better effort second half defensively. We were a more active, and that helped us get back in the game," RHS head coach Ron Porter said.
The Wolverines fell behind 14-2 early and trailed 14-6 after the first quarter.
But with five minutes left in the game, Ridgway's free throw pulled Riverton to within three at 37-33.
Three minutes later, Fegler hit one of two free throws and Ridgway's rebound and putback put Riverton to within two with 1:53 left.
Lady Tiger Summer Newman, who led all scorers with 17, missed a shot with 50 seconds left, the Wolverines grabbed the rebound, and Riverton's Taylor Harris then missed a good looking 3-point shot that would have given Riverton the lead.
"I thought it was going in. I told her afterward to keep shooting and that there was nothing wrong with that shot. We took it with 25 seconds left, which was just right," Porter said.
Porter also praised the play of Rachel Rapp, who scored six points.
"She gave us some valuable minutes today," Porter said.
The Lady Wolverines have a tall task Thursday when they travel to top-ranked Casper Natrona before returning home to Wolverine Gym next Saturday.
"We seriously look forward to the opportunity to play a really, really good team," Porter said of the Natrona Fillies.
