The much-anticipated home wrestling opener is almost here for Riverton High School.
After being on the road for the first two months of the season, the Riverton Wolverines battle at 5 p.m. Friday against Cody at the Tonkin Activities Center.
The junior varsity match begins the non-conference dual at 4 p.m. The Wolverines are in the Class 4-A West conference.
Cody participates in the Class 3-A West.
RHS has moved back into the No. 3 position in the Class 4-A rankings after being in the No. 4 spot.
"I don't think that our guys look at it being on the road as tough," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "They are use to it. Our guys are really comfortable with being on the road.
I will be really interested to see how we are at home."
Cody isn't ranked this year.
"They are pretty excited to come to the "Den" and get some of our fans in here," Galey said. "I hope that we can get a great crowd.
It's a good atmosphere when this place is full. It just gets extremely loud. That is when there energy level is going to go up a couple of notches."
Joey Ladd will wrestle Friday at 106 pounds for RHS. The Wolverines are open in the 113-pound class. Gavin Wilson has the starting position at 120 pounds. Galey said 126 pounds will either be Hank Osborne or Michael Menzies.
Arhen Wempen (132 pounds), T.J. Turner (138), Tyler Allen (145), Beau Batista (152), Rudy Batista (160), T.J. Galey (170), Reece Prosser (182), Casey Savage (195), Riley Reichert (220) and Dawson Steeds (heavyweight) make up the rest of the lineup.
Cody's top wrestlers are Corbin Adams (120 pounds), Austin Gifford (132), Tate Peringer (138), Russ Wilde (145) and John Beaudrie (152).
"I know that Cody has several weights right in the middle that have some pretty salty guys," Galey said.
"From about 120 pounds to 152 pounds is where they are there best.
"We don't have any weaknesses there. I think that will make things pretty interesting."
After the match with Cody, the Wolverines will head to Casper for Saturday's Class 4-A West conference duals.
RHS will wrestle against Casper Kelly Walsh, Rock Springs, Evanston and Green River.
"The duals will set the tone for the regional tournament," Galey said.
"Team-wise it's important that we win. I will be disappointed if we don't.
"We are going down there expecting to win. There is a lot on the line with seedings."
