Bird hazard analysis set for airport

Jan 25, 2013 - By Alejandra Silva, Staff Writer

Birds on runways and flight paths at Riverton Regional Airport are a concern to airport officials, so airport staff and the board are reviewing bids received for the Wildlife Hazard Assessment and Management Plan to be carried out at the airport.

Riverton public services director Urbigkit said due to a well-known incident in New York where a commercial jetliner landed in the Hudson River after hitting a flock of geese, a more thorough assessment of bird hazards at Riverton Regional would be beneficial.

Loomacres Wildlife Management Inc. of Warnerville, New York, with an office in Worland, confirmed the lowest bid of $73,000. Also bidding were Morrison-Maierle Inc. from Helena, Mont., SWCA Environmental Consultants of Houston, and Smith Environmental and Engineering from Westminster, Colo.

"There's a big push to have safety around the airport," Griffin said.

He said officials will make sure bidders have met the required criteria, and the board will review all bids before a decision is made.

Urbigkit said the city budgeted $133,000 for the review, and all four bids came under that amount. A year-round assessment is expected as opposed to the one-day studies the airport has done in the past, because different species will appear during different seasons.

"Like we have the crow issues in the winter but not the summer," Griffin said.
