Indoor track contingent wins medals in Gillette

Jan 25, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lane Savage launched the shot 47-3.75 Saturday at the Gillette Invitational indoor meet for Riverton High School to place second in his event.

Cody's Garret Lynch finished first at 51-7.50. Justin Berkley from Gillette was third in 45-3.50.

No team scores were kept in the one-day meet. The invitational was the second one of the indoor season for most of the track teams in Wyoming, but the season opener for the Riverton Wolverines.

"I was pleasantly surprised with how we did in our first meet of the season," RHS coach Tawn Gopp said. "We had a lot of good individual performances."

Jesse Hawk finished sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.56.

Hawk started out the year playing football for the Dubois Rams.

Hawk was one of the top running backs to help carry the Rams to the 6-man title in November. Hawk moved to Wind River after football season.

Gopp is working with Wind River and Shoshoni athletes for the indoor season.

Those schools don't offer indoor track.

Hawk was ninth in the pole vault with a leap of 12-0. Leighton Blanchard won the title at 14-0.

"Jesse has the potential to go higher in the pole vault," Gopp said.

Riverton's 4x200-meter relay team of Hawk, Cole Bossert, Rhett Rogge and Tyler Rupe crossed the finish line third in a time of 1:40.82.

The Wolverines had all clean handoffs in the race to contend for the title.

The 4x200-meter relay isn't used in the outdoor season.

Kelly Walsh won the relay title in 1:36.14. Casper Natrona was second in 147.67.

Shep Campbell placed fourth for the Wolverines in the high jump at 5-10.

Ben Mancuso from Burlington captured the title with an impressive jump of 6-8.

Mancuso won the Class 1-A state outdoor high jump title and the Roy Peck Invitational in Riverton. Rupe finished fourth for the Wolverines in the 400 meters in a time of 56.52.

Gillette's Tichun Aipperspach was first in 55:.02.

For the RHS girls, Tasha Maddock crossed the finish line fifth in the 800 meters in 2:33.86.

Darcey Maddock was eighth at 30-11 in the triple jump.

The Wolverines took part Friday in a track meet in Spearfish, S.D. at Black Hills State.

After the meet in South Dakota, the Wolverines will be at the Cheyenne Invitational on Feb. 9. The state meet meet is March 1-2 back in Gillette.
