Finally on home mat, RHS routs Cody

Riverton hosts Laramie on Thursday night before the big Ron Thon Invitational starts Friday.

Riverton High School won four wrestling matches on pins Friday night to smash Cody 53-10 in its season opener at the Tonkin Activities Center.

RHS only lost three of 14 matches in the short contest. The Riverton Wolverines are the No. 3 ranked program in Class 4-A this week. Cody is in the Class 3-A division.

The Wolverines had spent the first two months of the season on the road before Friday's match with Cody.

"It was good to be at home," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "I think that our older guys knew what to expect and handled it pretty well."

RHS participated Saturday in the conference duals at Casper Natrona. The Wolverines will host Laramie in a dual Thursday night. RHS will be in the annual Ron Thon Invitational Friday and Saturday at Wolverine Gym.

Riverton's T.J. Turner pinned Tate Pehringer in a time of 2:42 at 138 pounds for the first fall of the match for the Wolverines. The dual started out at 106 pounds.

"I thought that Turner had a lot of offense going," Galey said. "We have been trying to get him to that point. T.J. will keep on getting better and better."

T.J. Galey had a short night for the Wolverines with a pin over Dominic Vaughn in the 170-pound class in a time of 46 seconds.

Reece Prosser followed up the victory with another pin at 182 pounds.

"What Reece did was no surprise to me," coach Galey said. "Reece is a gamer."

Riverton's Riley Reichert pinned Marc Stroud in a time of 30 seconds at 220 pounds to close out the match with an exclamation point.

"Riley hasn't practiced much as of late," Galey said. "He got hurt a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't sure what to expect. He was ready to go and did what he needed to do."

Riverton's Gavin Wilson (120 pounds) and Ahren Wempen (132 pounds) won decisive victories.

Joey Ladd (106), Tyler Allen (145) and Dawson Steeds (heavyweight) had forfeit wins for the Wolverines.
