Tiger wrestlers split duals with Park County teams

Jan 27, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Ross Sloss and Kegan Wells won back-to-back wrestling matches on pins as Lander Valley High School edged Cody 40-36 Thursday night on the road.

Sloss pinned Malik Diler in a time of 49 seconds at 220 pounds to set up the final match of the evening.

With the pressure on, Wells pinned Mark Stroud in a time of 1:47 in the heavyweight bracket.

to propel the Tigers to the four-point victory.

The win was crucial for LVHS because both programs are in the Class 3-A West conference.

"Part of being a heavyweight is knowing that it may come down to your match," LVHS coach Nick Fulton said. "Kegan did not let that pressure get to him Thursday night, and he was able to dictate the entire match until he got the fall."

LVHS fell to Powell 55-15 on Friday night. The Tigers will now focus on the Ron Thon Invitational Friday and Saturday at Wolverine Gym in Riverton.

The Ron Thon is the biggest regular season tournament in the state. The Tigers will battle teams from the Class 4-A, 3-A and 2-A divisions.

Lander 40, Cody 36

Lander's Ty Alexander fought his way to an 8-6 overtime victory over Corbin Adams at 120 pounds.

The match was deadlocked at 6-6 after the three periods. In overtime, Alexander scored a takedown for the win.

At 126 pounds, Andrew Von Rein won three points for LVHS on a 4-2 victory against Max Dickerman. Von Rein had a takedown and an escape in the third period to steal the win.

Jacob Miller controlled Cody's Russ Wilde 12-3 in the 152-pound class.

Jason Hanson added a pin for LVHS at 182 pounds in a time of 44 seconds over Mike Castillo.

"Cody is pretty loaded in the middle weights. We knew going in that those weights we were slightly outmatched," Fulton said. "Both Ross and Kegan showed maturity on the mat, and were able to get first-period pins to seal the dual win for the team."
