Lovell recovers from bad start to beat Lady Chiefs 56-39

Jan 27, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

ETHETE -- Lovell survived an ice-cold opening period to come from behind and take a 56-39 win Friday over Wyoming Indian.

The Lady Chiefs dropped their season opener at Lovell back in November and didn't fare much better at home against the tall, talented Bulldogs. Wyoming Indian's defense was stellar in the opening period with the Chiefs limiting Lovell to just three shot attempts in the entire period. Only a baseline trey with seven seconds left in the opening period avoided a shutout of the Bulldogs.

In the second Lovell came untracked and knotted the game at nine with 4:11 left in the second period.

The score teetered back and forth, with both teams offenses hampered by repeated turnovers, most of them the unforced variety.

Freshman point guard Alyssa Trosper had a solid game and sparked the Lady Chiefs.Trosper's running jump shot cut Lovell's lead to 20-18 with 26 seconds left in the half, but the Bulldogs added a free throw a few seconds later and led by three at the half.

The third period looked more like the Elks Hoop Shoot than an actual basketball game as both teams shoved, tripped and hammered each other each time the ball moved inside the paint. The teams combined for 10 straight free throw attempts over a three-minute period before Lovell finally hit a basket.

Lovell broke open the game with consecutive 3-pointers to take a 33-21 lead with 4:31 remaining in the third.

The Bulldogs played a matchup zone for much of the second half and it gave the Chiefs problems in the half court.

Another Bulldog trey gave the Big Horn County visitors their largest lead of the game at 38-21 but Sierra Pingree answered for the Chiefs with a trey of her own, and the Chiefs battled hard to get the ball inside to Brindi Lock and Kanani Washakie, but continued Lovell fouls in the paint sent the duo to the line, where they had problems converting.

Wyoming Indian continues non-conference play this week hosting Riverside on Friday and traveling to Greybull on Saturday.
