Rustlers grab seventh league win, stay atop standings

Jan 27, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College was all over Little Big Horn from the start of their Region IX North men's basketball game on Saturday night, cruising to an 86-74 victory.

The win at Rustler Gym kept the CWC Rustlers on top of the standings.

The Rustlers are 7-1 In conference play and 17-3 overall. Little Big Horn is 2-6 in league action.

The game finished the first half of the Region IX conference season. CWC has eight more games left to play. The winner of the north division will host the Region IX tournament in March.

"I felt like we played really well in the first 30 minutes of the game," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said.

CWC built a 26-point lead midway through the second half.

"We just relaxed way too much and were just careless with the ball," Lindley said. "We executed very well on offense for the first 30 minutes. In the last 10 minutes, we turned the ball over way too much. We have to take care of the basketball."

Five CWC reached double figures in the 12-point win. Davion Pearson led all scorers with 18 points. Tanner Newbold put in 16 points on four 3-pointers. Roozario Wiggins added 15 points.

Ryan Thomas and David Baety scored 10 points apiece.

"I was pleased with our balance off our basketball team," Lindley said.

"It has been like that all year long. We don't know who is going to have a big game night in and night out."

CWC plays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Northwest College at Rustler Gym.

"We are sitting where we want to be for the first half of Region IX," Lindley said.

"We are excited for the next eight games."

The Rustlers beat Northwest in the first conference game of the season in Powell. Northwest is 4-5 in league.

"Northwest is a very good basketball team," Lindley said. They have a really good inside game. They had us beat at their place. We have to come out ready to play from the opening tip."

CWC faces Casper College at 5 p.m. Saturday to end its home stand.
