Lawmakers consider court gun ban
CHEYENNE -- Wyoming lawmakers are moving to ban people from bringing guns and other deadly weapons into courtrooms.
The House of Representatives gave initial approval to the bill Wednesday. It must pass two more votes before it can move to the Senate.
Violators would face up to 10 years in prison as well as a fine up to $10,000 under House Bill 216. It's sponsored by Republican Rep. Kermit Brown of Laramie.
Wyoming law currently bars people from bringing weapons to jails, prisons, the state hospital and the Wyoming Boys School and the Wyoming Girls School.
Last year, an Albany County judge barred guns in the county courthouse, which contains some county offices. County commissioners opposed the move, saying judges only have that authority within their own courtrooms.
Lawyer disbarred in Cody
CHEYENNE -- The Wyoming Supreme Court has disbarred a Cody lawyer who was accused of misappropriating nearly $700,000 in assets from a client's trust.
A beneficiary of the trust had filed a civil complaint against attorney Jody Montgomery Vannoy, resulting in Vannoy being ordered to pay nearly $700,000 for misappropriating funds for her personal use.
The Board of Professional Responsibility then recommended sanctions against Vannoy. The Wyoming State Bar said Wednesday that the Wyoming Supreme Court approved the board's recommendation to disbar her. Vannoy also must pay more than $2,300 in administrative fees and costs to the Wyoming State Bar.
Phone numbers listed for Vannoy are disconnected, and she couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
Icy roads blamed for Rawlins wrecks
RAWLINS -- Icy road conditions are blamed for a number of crashes around Rawlins, including two separate ones involving semitrailers.
One truck slid off Interstate 80 Wednesday night, spilling its load of clementine oranges. The driver wasn't hurt but the highway was closed for three hours.
Another truck rolled just past Creston Junction, trapping the driver inside. Lt. Bob Garner of the Wyoming State Patrol said the driver was extricated and taken to the hospital.
No other injuries were reported in any of the other accidents.
