Feb 1, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports WriterWind River played Dubois Friday night in a doubleheader at Wolverine Gym.
PAVILLION -- It was a mismatch from pregame warmup Thursday in Pavillion as Lovell trounced the Wind River boys 76-41, but the lopsided score didn't tell the entire story of the game.
Giving up two years of experience and about six inches in height didn't help the Cougar cause as the freshman-laden squad met the top-ranked team in Class 2-A basketball.
Lovell played the part of the top seed, hitting five of its first six shots. Imposing 6-foot-7 post Cody Savage had the team's only miss in the opening flurry on a point-blank shot.
The 17-0 opening run came on three treys, with Kade Nicholls draining a pair and Dylan Hultgren hitting another.
Ryan Clark and Hultgren each hit long two-point jump shots as well. Clark's follow shot with 5:13 remaining in the first had the Cougar faithful wondering if Wind River would ever score.
Clayton Renick finally found the range for the Cougars with 5:02 on the clock on a follow shot, and Wind River blossomed offensively for the next few minutes.
Delshai and Brett Roanhorse each hit jump shots, and Renick added another through the tall Lovell front line and Wind River made it a game at 19-8.
The Cougars continued to surge with freshman Caleb C'Bearing hitting a jab-step 3-pointer to open the second, the hit another trey a few seconds later and Wind River trailed by just nine points.
The back-to-back treys were a wake-up call of sorts and Lovell rolled on a 10-2 run to build a huge lead. Austin Ellis hit a pair of jumpers, and a Savage free throw doubled the score at 36-18. But Delshai Roanhorse hit a trey, and Wind River hung on tenuously for the remainder of the half.
The Bulldogs put the hammer down to open the third, scoring 10 unanswered points on baskets from Nicholls, Hultgren and Ellis and a 3-pointer from Nicholls.
Brett Roanhorse broke the run on a drive with 4:22 left in the third ,and C'Bearing hit his third and final trey.
That was the last rally by the Cougars.
Lovell went on three straight possessions to Savage and established a post presence that Wind River had no answer for.
A Clark layup with 6:41 remaining in the final period set the mercy rule into effect as the Bulldogs led 71-31. The clock ran for the rest of the game.
Renick scored a career-high 14 points to pace the Cougars, while C'Bearing poured in a dozen. Savage led the Bulldogs with 18. Hultgren tallied 14, Nicholls 13 and Clark 10.
Wind River hosts Class 1-A Dubois on Friday, while Lovell entertains Greybull on Friday, then plays at Big Horn on Saturday.
