Man fired at car Thursday; search is on

Feb 1, 2013 - By Christina George, Staff Writer

A man suspected in a reported weapon offense Thursday evening near Lander remained at large Friday, but authorities said the suspect is not a danger to the public.

"We do not believe there is a significant risk at this point," Lander police chief Jim Carey said Friday.

Officials said the weapon used in the incident is in custody.

In a press release issued by Fremont County Sheriff's Capt. David Good, the dispatch center received a call at about 5:35 p.m. Thursday regarding gunshots fired at a vehicle in the Sinks Canyon area.

The reporting party advised that a man in a Toyota pickup truck had gained his attention and was waiving him over.

When the complainant pulled over, Good said, the suspect started firing shots from a "hunting type" rifle. The suspect reportedly fired at the reporting party's truck, which had two other occupants.

"It was found that the truck was hit three times with a bullet," Good said. "The suspect fled from the area, and his truck was found at a residence in Lander a short time later."

Traffic in the area of South Fifth and Shoshone streets was diverted for several hours Thursday while officers investigated the area. Good said Lander police, Sheriff's deputies and Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers spent the night conducting several house checks and canvassing other locations in Lander in an attempt to find the suspect.

"Contact was made with the suspect via cell phone shortly after the shooting incident, but the suspect would not give his location and would not talk with officers about the incident," Good said. "At this time, the case is under investigation."

Carey said Marc Cunningham, 33, of Lander, was arrested at 9:50 p.m. Thursday at Lander's Holiday Inn for interference relating to the alleged weapon offense. Carey said Cunningham is not the suspect, but Carey confirmed that Cunningham's arrest is related to one of the house checks.

Carey declined to release further information about the case since it is under investigation by the Sheriff's office. Good could not be reached by press time for additional information about the incident.
