CWC women upset Casper College

Feb 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Marissa Hogan came through in the final seconds for Central Wyoming College on a layup to give her team a signature 54-52 Region IX women's basketball victory over Casper College Saturday afternoon at Rustler Gym.

CWC coach Serol Stauffenberg said the final play of the game was designed to have the ball in Hogan's hands in crunch time.

Hogan ended the game with 16 points to give CWC a win over a quality team.

Casper College missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"We have been in too many close games," CWC women's coach Serol Stauffenberg said. "We chipped back into this game after being down nine or 10 points. We proved that maybe we have the mental ability to do it."

Men lose in OT

Behind 30 points from Remi Dibo, the Casper College men won a 90-77 decision in overtime over the CWC men.

The Thunderbirds outscored CWC 18-5 in the extra five minutes to complete the regular season sweep over the Rustlers.

"Casper made big shots," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said. "You are disappointed that a guy goes off for 30 points, but he made a couple of tough shots. He made a big-time shot with a hand in his face. They made plays at the end, and we didn't."

CWC plays Wednesday night in a doubleheader at Western Wyoming College in Rock Springs. The CWC women lost in triple overtime in the first game of that series at Rustler Gym.

Stauffenberg couldn't get anything to click for his team with the right lineup on the floor in the first half.

Thanks to the outside shooting from Casper's Shelby Stewart, the Lady Thunderbirds were on, building a 35-25 lead. Stewart had four 3-pointers in the half.

"We lost track of Stewart," Stauffenberg said. "She is a great shooter."

CWC made the halftime adjustments in the final half to secure the victory.

Center Stephanie Smith had 18 points to help out on the offensive end.

Regular starting point guard Tina Hosea didn't play in the game after suffering a knee injury on Wednesday night.

Stauffenberg said Abbey Wilson and Shay Cooper filled in for Hosea at the point guard.

The Rustlers looked to have the contest locked up in regulation time after Ryan Thomas nailed two free throws for a 72-69 lead.

However, Remi Dibo connected for a 3-pointer to deadlock the score at 72-72.

On the final play of regulation, CWC's Roozario Wiggins had the final shot, but come up short.

In the extra period, Dibo swished back-to-back 3-pointers for a 77-74 lead.

CWC point guard Davion Pearson fouled out of the game with almost four minutes left in overtime.

With Pearson on the bench, Casper College ran away from the Rustlers to get the road win.

Thomas led CWC with 21 points. Tanner Newbold had 16 points. Wiggins and Austin Hudson had 10 points apiece.

In the second half, CWC's Armani Flannigan didn't play because of an injury he suffered in the first 20 minutes.

Flannigan scored two points in 10 minutes of action.
